Nie zawsze lekarze są świadomi ,że  np.RSV jest dużym genomem i jak odra wymaga sporych dawek witaminy A.

Abstract

An intervention study was conducted in 75 young children under one year hospitalized with pneumonia or bronchiolitis caused by respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) to evaluate therapeutic effectiveness of selenium (Se) supplement on acute respiratory lower tract infection caused by RSV with randomly controlled and double-masked method. Trial subjects were divided into two groups, one with 37 children in routine treatment and the other with 38 children in routine treatment plus Se supplement. The control group derived from 35 normal children during their physical check-up in the out-patient department. Sodium selenite was supplemented orally with 1 mg on the second day of hospitalization. Results showed that days needed for their relief of symptoms and signs were fewer in Se supplement group than that in controls and recovery in indicators of cell immune was better in the former than that in the latter. Levels of Se and glutathione peroxidase in plasma and white cells could be increased by Se supplement. It suggests that Se supplement can promote recovery from RSV infection.

Respiratory syncytial virus induces oxidative stress by modulating antioxidant enzymes

Abstract

Oxidative stress plays an important role in the pathogenesis of lung inflammation. Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection induces reactive oxygen species (ROS) production in vitro and oxidative injury in lungs in vivo; however, the mechanism of RSV-induced cellular oxidative stress has not been investigated. Therefore, we determined whether RSV infection of airway epithelial cells modified the expression and/or activities of antioxidant enzymes (AOE). A549 cells, a human alveolar type II-like epithelial cell line, and small airway epithelial (SAE) cells, normal human cells derived from terminal bronchioli, were infected with RSV and harvested at various time points to measure F(2)-8 isoprostanes by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and total and reduced glutathione (GSH and GSSG) by colorimetric assay. Superoxide dismutase (SOD) 1, 2, and 3, catalase, glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and glutathione S-transferase (GST) expression was determined by quantitative real-time PCR and Western blot, and their activity was measured by colorimetric assays. RSV infection induced a significant increase of lipid peroxidation products as well as a significant decrease in the GSH/GSSG ratio. There was a significant decrease in SOD 1, SOD 3, catalase, and GST expression with a concomitant increase of SOD 2 in RSV-infected cells, compared with uninfected cells. Total SOD activity was increased, but catalase, GPx, and GST activities were decreased, after RSV infection. Our findings suggest that RSV-induced cellular oxidative damage is the result of an imbalance between ROS production and antioxidant cellular defenses. Modulation of oxidative stress represents a potential novel pharmacologic approach to ameliorate RSV-induced acute lung inflammation.

Treatment of respiratory syncytial virus infection with vitamin A: a randomized, placebo-controlled trial in Santiago, Chile

Abstract

Background: Treatment with high dose vitamin A reduces complications and duration of hospitalization for children with measles. In respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection, as with measles, low serum vitamin A concentrations correlate with increased severity of illness.

Methods: To determine whether high dose vitamin A treatment is also effective for treating RSV disease, we conducted a randomized, double blind, placebo-controlled trial among 180 RSV-infected children between 1 month and 6 years of age at three hospitals in Santiago, Chile. Children with nasal washes positive for RSV antigen were given oral vitamin A (50,000 to 200,000 IU of retinyl palmitate, doses according to age; n = 89) or placebo (n = 91) within 2 days of admission.

Results: There was no significant benefit from vitamin A treatment for the overall group in duration of hospitalization, need for supplemental oxygen or time to resolve hypoxemia. For the subgroup of children with significant hypoxemia on admission (room air oxygen saturation level < or = 90%), those given vitamin A had more rapid resolution of tachypnea (P = 0.01) and a shorter duration of hospitalization (5.5 vs. 9.3 days, P = 0.09). No toxicities were seen, including excess vomiting or bulging fontanel.

Conclusions: If vitamin A has a beneficial effect on the course of RSV disease, it may be seen only in more severely ill children.

Jest ciezko. Lekarze podjeli dzisiaj decyzje o transfuzji/przetoczeniu krwi.

Valserze Transfuzja ,czyli krew ,ratuje życie i oznacza naprawdę zdrowie... Spadek hemoglobiny przy zapaleniu płuc jest konsekwencją... tej choroby ,a Transfuzja uzdrowi Krzysia + antybiotyki..Ja miałam tak duży spadek hemoglobiny,że nie mogłam utrzymać się na nogach,po Transfuzji--wróciło życie... Śpiący Krzyś  wyglada jak aniołek i modlę się o jego wyzdrowienie...

Jesteśmy z Tobą Piotrze i z rodziną Krzysia w łączności duchowej. Odwagi, będzie dobrze!

Oczywiście, pamiętam w modlitwie.

Niestety slabo. Bo transfuzji i zmianie antybiotykow poprawily sie markery krwi, ale goraczka sie utrzymuje juz trzeci tydzien. Mial robiony MRI i obraz pluc nie wyglada najlepiej. Ma znowu zmienione antybiotyki. Jesli nie bedzie poprawy to bedzie przeniesiony do szpitala specjalistycznego na oddzial chorob drog oddechowych. Poki co jest na pediatrii.
